“No Time Like The Future”

Greetings -

I hope you, your families and friends continue to be well, safe and healthy!

For this week's newsletter, I have diverged a bit. Rather than having one unifying theme, I am including reading and listening that examine 1) the need for self-awareness into our leadership blind spots and practical tips to mitigate them, including leveraging your existing strengths; 2) the importance of strategic, thoughtful and audience-specific communication, including tips specific to the COVID pandemic, as well as an array of pragmatic advice, models, etc. for increasing our messaging effectiveness and value delivery; 3) and finally thoughts and mental models for knowing when to stop vs. push on, advice on further exploring ideas vs exploiting what you already know about them and the fallacy of sunk costs and how they can limit our opportunities.

For those interested in how to tell truth to power and follow the courage of your convictions, Erika Cheung's TedTalk will be right up your alley. She, along with George Schultz's grandson (yes, that George Schultz), stood up and blew the whistle on Theranos, which ultimately led to the spectacular demise of the then Silicon Valley darling and it's founder Elizabeth Holmes. I also recommend the NY Times interview with actor and Parkinson's activist Michael J Fox. This guy is a force and a sterling reminder of the value of sustained excellence, resilience and hope as he navigates his illness.
